š„ When Promotion Reveals What Preparation Didn't Correct

There once was a man who was exceptionally gifted.
For years, he desired a particular position and worked hard for the opportunity to step into it.
Eventually, his gift opened doors, and he was promoted into the role he had long hoped to receive.
The problem wasn't his talent.
The problem was that there were areas of his character he had never fully addressed.
Those issues had been present long before the promotion, but because they remained hidden, they were often overlooked.
When greater responsibility came, those same unresolved issues came with it.
Over time, what had been hidden became visible.
What had been ignored could no longer be overlooked.
Eventually, the very things he failed to deal with in private affected his ability to remain in the position he had worked so hard to obtain.
His gift got him there.
His character could not keep him there.
As I reflected on that story, I couldn't help but think about how often we ask God for promotion, opportunity, influence, and greater responsibility while overlooking the work He wants to do within us first.
In John 15:4-5, Jesus teaches us that fruit is produced through abiding.
A branch does not strain to produce fruit. It simply remains connected to the vine.
In the same way, God develops His character within us as we remain connected to Him.
This principle is beautifully illustrated in the life of David.
Before David ever stood before Goliath, he stood before God.
Before he led a nation, he learned to follow God in a field.
While tending sheep, God was developing far more than David's skills.
He was building character, trust, and capacity.
- David learned worship in private.
- David learned courage in private.
- David learned obedience in private.
- David learned to trust God in private.
Those hidden seasons prepared him for public assignments.
One of the greatest misconceptions in the Christian life is that promotion solves problems.
It does not.
Promotion often reveals what preparation failed to correct.
That's why God is so concerned with what He builds in us before He builds something through us.
In the secret place, God develops character through the fruit of the Spirit.
He teaches us to trust Him when we cannot see the full picture.
He expands our capacity to carry the responsibilities He intends to entrust to us.
The goal of the secret place is not perfection.
The goal of the secret place is transformation.
God desires to shape us until:
- His desires become our desires.
- His priorities become our priorities.
- His ways become our ways.
š¤ A Moment of Reflection
Sometimes we become so focused on where we're trying to go that we overlook what God is trying to develop within us.
The secret place reminds us that God's greatest work is not always what He does through us, but what He does in us.
As you reflect on this week's message, consider whether there are areas of character, trust, or faithfulness that God may be inviting you to surrender more fully to Him.
Take a moment to pause and ask yourself:
Am I asking God for promotion, or am I allowing Him to prepare me for it?Ā
